The Book of Amos

When the Kingdom of Israel split into two kingdoms in the late 10th century BC, the king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel refused to allow his people to worship at Yahweh's temple in Jerusalem and instead established the worship of the golden calf at Bethel and Dan with other false gods. God sent prophets to denounce the idol worship of the people of the Northern Kingdom with warnings of His divine judgment if they refused to repent. In the 8th century BC, Yahweh sent Amos, a shepherd from Tekoa in Judah, as His oracle of divine judgment. He preached with vivid imagery against the corruption of wealth, perversion of justice, and illicit expressions of religion. The punishment of the Day of Yahweh was already looming in the threat of invasion by the Assyrians. Amos was the first to teach that Yahweh would bring judgment tempered with mercy in preserving a faithful remnant of His people. Do you count yourself among the faithful? Where is your heart? Can you give God the commitment of your undivided heart and not be led astray into the idolatrous ways of the secular world? References for the course are found in the Course Bibliography.
